How are licenses measured?
VUL is packaged in bundles of five to 10 portable licenses. Customers consume one license for each workload they choose to protect. That one license will protect any one of the following:
- 1 virtual machine (VM)
- 1 cloud instance/VM
- 1 database or application
- 1 physical server
- 3 laptops/workstations
- 500 GB of unstructured data
Licensing for today and beyond!
Older licenses limit your ability to grow, expand and keep up with today’s digital transformation demands. VUL helps you break free from legacy licensing options that are limited to certain workloads, restricted to on-premises only, or incapable of meeting today's data protection needs. Free your environment from limitations with a portable and future-proof solution.

As the market increasingly shifts toward multi-cloud and hybrid environments, data now needs to be more portable, and subscription licensing has become the expectation. Veeam made the commitment to our customers to offer more products via a portable license model. The customer benefits of this model include:
- Universal portability: Licenses can be used interchangeably across multiple Veeam products and workloads.
- Simplified use: Easier license ordering, management and merging capabilities.
- Increased value: Get more features at a lower price per workload. Buy only what you need without the risk of getting locked into specific workload licenses.
- Price predictability: Purchase multi-year contracts up-front or pay annually as you go.
- Pay per workload: Only buy what you need and increase, or decrease, based on need at the time of renewal.
- No lock-ins: If you're unsatisfied, you can choose not to renew your subscription.
- Support included: Get 24.7.365 production support for your entire license term at no extra cost
VUL is a portable license that can be used universally. It provides users with the added element of portability, which makes the jump to cloud and hybrid environments even easier without additional cloud fees.
VUL licenses are sold for a defined duration; one- to five-year terms paid up-front or three-year terms paid annually. These licenses can be used interchangeably across a variety of Veeam products and workload types. This licensing offers all the benefits of a pay-as-you-go license, like the ability to start small without lock-ins and the ability to pay-as-you-go with a cloud-friendly OpEx budgeting model. CapEx options are available as well.
There are many more benefits to VUL that separates it from legacy licenses. You no longer have to purchase licenses by individual products or ones that are restricted to a specific workload type. This new model makes a variety of products and features more readily available to more users. This means that licenses can be used across multiple products and workloads, whether they be virtual, physical or in the cloud. You aren’t tied to a license type or to a product you don’t need — now that's portability!
Use what you want, when you need it. License portability simplifies ordering and license management, which reduces the complexity of managing multiple SKUs by product or workload type.
